Best value hack: Stay in the ghat area (Assi, Munshi, or near Dashashwamedh) to save on transport. You can walk to most attractions. Budget guesthouses with rooftop Ganga views exist for INR 800-1,200 — these offer an experience that luxury hotels charge INR 10,000+ for.

Local Tip

The best things in Varanasi are free: the Ganga Aarti, the ghats at sunrise, temple visits, walking the old city lanes, and people-watching at any chai stall. You could spend three days here and barely spend anything beyond food and accommodation. As of early 2026, budget travelers can expect to spend ₹1,500-2,500 per day including accommodation, food, and local transport.

Money-Saving Tips

  1. Stay in the ghat area. Walk everywhere. Look for hostels from ₹400 near Assi Ghat. Transport costs add up quickly if you stay far from the action.
  2. Eat street food. Seriously. The best food in Varanasi is on the street, not in restaurants. A kachori breakfast at Ram Bhandar (INR 40) beats any hotel breakfast (INR 300).
  3. Take shared boats. INR 100-150 per person vs INR 500+ for a private boat. Same river, same ghats, same sunrise.
  4. Skip the guided tours. Varanasi rewards independent exploration. Download an offline map, read this website, and explore at your own pace.
  5. Use UPI payments. If you have an Indian bank account, UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe) works at many shops and restaurants — no cash withdrawal fees.
  6. Bargain, always. Whether it is a boat, an auto, or a silk scarf — the first price is never the real price. Start at 50%.
  7. Drink chai, not coffee. Chai at a ghat stall: INR 10. A cappuccino at a cafe: INR 150. The chai is better anyway.
  8. Visit Sarnath by shared auto. INR 20-30 per person from Varanasi Junction area, vs INR 300-500 for a private auto. For the cheapest transport options to and within Varanasi, check our transport guide.

Scam Awareness

Heads Up

Varanasi is generally safe, but these common scams target tourists:
  • Cremation ghat donations: Men at Manikarnika claim to collect money for wood for poor families. This is a scam. Do not give money.
  • Auto drivers to silk shops: "My uncle has a factory" = commission shop. Always choose shops independently.
  • Fake priests at ghats: Someone puts a tikka on your forehead and then demands INR 500. Politely decline unsolicited blessings.
  • Boat price inflation: Quoting INR 1,000 for a ride that should cost INR 200. Always negotiate before boarding.
  • "Closed today" guides: Someone tells you a temple/ghat is closed and offers to take you to an alternative. It is not closed — walk in and check yourself.

ATMs & Payment Methods

Cash

  • Essential for street food, boats, rickshaws, small shops
  • ATMs at Godowlia, Lanka, Sigra, main roads
  • SBI, HDFC, and ICICI ATMs are most reliable
  • Withdraw in advance — ATMs run dry on weekends
  • Keep small denominations (INR 10, 20, 50, 100)

Digital Payment

  • UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe) accepted at many shops
  • Credit cards work at hotels and large showrooms only
  • Many restaurants accept UPI — look for the QR code
  • Foreign tourists: consider getting a local prepaid SIM with UPI-linked wallet
  • International cards may not work at some ATMs
