Quick Answer
Best overall: October to March. Comfortable temperatures (5-33°C), no rain, clear skies, and the festival season (Dev Deepawali, Mahashivratri, Holi).
Best single month: November. Dev Deepawali turns the entire riverfront into a sea of a million flames. The weather is perfect. Photography conditions are ideal.
Avoid: May and June unless you enjoy 45°C heat. July-August (monsoon) floods many ghats but has its own moody beauty — see our monsoon travel guide for details.
Winter 2025-26 saw record tourist numbers in December — book accommodation at least 2 weeks ahead for October through March.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January
Cold mornings (5-8°C on the river), clear skies, great for photography. Peak tourist season. Makar Sankranti kite festival. Wrap up warmly for sunrise boat rides.
February
Warming up, still pleasant. Mahashivratri (Feb/Mar) brings huge pilgrim crowds to Kashi Vishwanath. One of the best months for Varanasi.
March
Holi celebrations are legendary in Varanasi — colorful, chaotic, and joyful. Temperatures start rising. Still comfortable for sightseeing.
April
Getting hot. Midday sightseeing is uncomfortable. Early morning and evening visits are still fine. Fewer tourists means better prices.
May
Very hot. The old city lanes feel like an oven. Only visit if necessary. Air-conditioned hotel is essential. Stick to dawn and dusk activities.
June
Extremely hot and increasingly humid as the monsoon approaches. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms bring temporary relief. Not recommended.
July
Full monsoon. Heavy rain, flooded ghats, high humidity. The Ganga is at its fullest and most powerful. Uniquely atmospheric but challenging.
August
Peak monsoon continues. Many lower ghats submerged. Boat rides still possible but the river is fast. Cheapest accommodation rates.
September
Monsoon receding. The city starts drying out. Late September can be pleasant. River levels dropping but still high.
October
Perfect weather arrives. Clear skies, moderate temperatures, the ghats emerge from monsoon. Navratri and Dussehra festivities. The beginning of peak season.
November
The best month. Dev Deepawali (million diyas on ghats), Diwali in early Nov, cool weather, perfect photography light. Book months in advance.
December
Cool and crisp. Dense morning fog on the river creates atmospheric boat rides. Christmas/New Year brings international tourists. Cold mornings.
Festival Calendar

Dev Deepawali
November (Kartik Purnima)The crown jewel. All 84 ghats are lit with over a million earthen diyas. The gods are said to descend to bathe in the Ganga. Fireworks, grand aarti, floating diyas. Unmissable.
