Quick Answer

Best overall: October to March. Comfortable temperatures (5-33°C), no rain, clear skies, and the festival season (Dev Deepawali, Mahashivratri, Holi).

Best single month: November. Dev Deepawali turns the entire riverfront into a sea of a million flames. The weather is perfect. Photography conditions are ideal.

Avoid: May and June unless you enjoy 45°C heat. July-August (monsoon) floods many ghats but has its own moody beauty — see our monsoon travel guide for details.

Winter 2025-26 saw record tourist numbers in December — book accommodation at least 2 weeks ahead for October through March.

Festival Calendar

Varanasi's festival calendar is one of the most packed in India. Almost every month brings a major celebration that transforms the city. See our full festival dates calendar for 2026, including the spectacular Dev Deepawali in November. These are the ones worth planning your trip around:

Makar Sankranti

January 14

Kite festival and ritual bathing in the Ganga. The sky fills with colorful kites. Thousands of pilgrims take a holy dip at Dashashwamedh and Assi Ghats.

Mahashivratri

February/March

The night of Lord Shiva — the biggest religious event at Kashi Vishwanath. The temple stays open all night. Expect queues of 3-6 hours. The city vibrates with devotion.

Holi

March

The festival of colors is wild in Varanasi. Bhang thandai flows freely. The old city becomes a paint battlefield. Incredibly fun but protect your clothes and camera.

Ganga Dussehra

May/June

Celebrating the descent of the Ganga to earth. Ritual bathing, floating diyas, and special prayers at the ghats. A quieter but deeply spiritual event.

Nag Nathaiya

October/November

A unique Varanasi event where the legend of Krishna dancing on the serpent Kaliya is re-enacted on the Ganga with boats and costumed performers.

Dev Deepawali

November (Kartik Purnima)

The crown jewel. All 84 ghats are lit with over a million earthen diyas. The gods are said to descend to bathe in the Ganga. Fireworks, grand aarti, floating diyas. Unmissable.

Ganga Aarti (Daily)

Every evening

Not a festival per se, but the daily evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is a year-round spiritual spectacle. See our dedicated Ganga Aarti guide.

Local Tip

For Dev Deepawali and Mahashivratri, book your hotel at least 2-3 months in advance. Prices triple and the city is packed. For Holi, stay near a ghat and wear white clothes you do not mind ruining — the color does not wash out.

Crowd Levels & Pricing

Money Saver

Budget travelers: Visit in April, September, or early October. Hotel prices drop 40-60% compared to peak season (Nov-Feb). The weather is less ideal but you get a more authentic, less-touristy Varanasi. The ghats, temples, and Ganga Aarti are identical year-round — it is the same experience at half the price.
